3/4" U-Matic SP:

U-Matic SP is an analog SD videocassette format that followed the U-Matic BVU format. It features an improved recording system.

Developed by:  Sony.
Launched on:  early 90’s
Used for:  news acquisition and television production
a.k.a.: Umatic SP, U-matic SP, ¾” SP, three quarter inch SP, ¾” U-matic SP, three quarter inch U-Matic SP, BVU-SP
Cassette size:

  • U-Matic SP-S – field VTRs. Maximum 20 min. recording time.
  • U-Matic SP-L – Edit decks. One hour recording time

Magnetic tape used:  3/4” oxide-formulated tape

Cassette shells: varied in color depending on the manufacturer

Magnetic tape manufacturers: Sony, Fuji, Maxell, Ampex and 3M

Video recording:  Analog video recording using a helical scan head. SP had a horizontal resolution of 330 lines.

Audio recording: stereo linear audio tracks with Dolby N.R.
